Resolved Numbers by mailbox name

After each mailbox's name (iPad Air), there is a number, but I am at a loss to know what it signifies. All I'm sure of is that it isn't the number of emails in that box. I searched here and via Google, but didn't find the answer anywhere.

Yep, I think it is the number of unread emails also.

I wondered about that, but dismissed it because thought certain folders had only "read" mail. It is, however, a reasonable answer.
