I'm not new to the world of computing. I've been building my own rigs for the last 10 years and know quite a bit about current hardware, but I for the life of me can't find an answer to this question: Does the amount of vram on the current macbook pros make much of a difference?

I'm aware that on the previous generation MBP the jump from 256 mb to 512 mb with the 8600m gt made little difference. Is this still the case with the new 9600M GT or have these issues been resolved?

Nope - only if you were to plug in a LARGE external monitor, would the extra VRAM have a slight effect on FPS and refresh rates.

That said, if you aren't going to be using large external monitors, the difference will have a maximum of 5% performance difference.
