My 17" 2.6GHz Santa Rosa MBP (bought Nov. 2007) died tuesday morning; coming out of sleep, screen stayed black. At first it was just the screen; I was able to get it to eject the CD, rebooting I heard startup chimes, etc. Within an hour not even startup chimes. Took it to the genius bar, suggested to them it was the nVidia thing, and they said they'd test it and fix whatever was up, but they didn't have the parts and it would take a week.

I was stuck using my crappy dell work-issued laptop. Argh.

Good news: this morning I checked the on-line repair status, and it was fixed. They replaced the motherboard. It was the nVidia problem, indeed. All is now fine.

Just thought I'd share :)

Known issue and it's great that it is acknowledged by Apple so your repairs are free.

Yep. I didn't mean to imply it was a new issue; as I mentioned, I even suggested that was the problem to the geniuses.

Just thought it would be nice to say something happy, for once, and perhaps let others know that when it happens to them the repair takes just a couple days.
