This is not exactly what I expected to find in an email from the NY Times today..

"Dear NYTimes.com E-Mail Subscriber,

In the past you've signed up to receive text-only e-mail newsletters from the New York Times. This e-mail is to notify you that we will now replace your text-only newsletter with an HTML version.

Why the switch? We want you to get the most out of your NYTimes.com experience. Your HTML newsletters will include images, easy to scan sections and all of the articles and news that you currently receive. (there was a link to see a sample).

The best part is that this switch doesn't require any action on your part - we'll start sending you your new HTML newsletters in the days to come."

plus a few links into acount management in case we were wide awake enough to think, uh... NOT.

The day I voluntarily sign up for HTML mail is the day I decide I like being tracked all over the net and having to add yet more NoScript prohibitions. I guess NYT thinks that day is now. I might think today's a good day to cancel my sub and sell the stock too!

Saving the best part for last: when I went into my account to unsub from NYT emails, the page went all balky and wouldn't do them. Probably server overload, I can't be the only one p&sssssdOFF about this #epicFAIL of an idea, whoever thought of it.

/rant, enjoy the weekend!
