NYC tips: what cool non-touristy things to go see?

Hi,

I'm going to visit New York City (we're staying in Manhattan) for a week in April and I was wondering if anybody could give me some interesting tips (besides the Apple Store at 5th av). Preferably some interesting things to go see or visit that are not totally touristy. Like nice contemporary art galleries, not so well known places to visit, stores, interesting restaurants, pubs, venues. Anything interesting really

Also, does anybody know good gig guide? What are the good venues? (I like rock, alternative, indie, singer songwriter, but also drum 'n bass, breakbeats, etc).

the Bubble Lounge is a great bar for evening and they play some great music.

Also, just walk around Soho and you're bound to find something cool.
