O2 Iphone and Orange

I have a 2yr old 3g, which i am looking to hand on to my daughter. This was bought as an 18mth contract phone on O2.

My questions are:

If i restore the Iphone and put an Orange contract sim in, will it just download a new carrier file and be up and running?

do i need to unlock the phone in order for it to work?
