I am new to the Mac, and I am exploring the possibility of using iCal. I want sync it with a (yet to be purchased) iPhone. I would also like to share calendars with my wife. I was hoping that between iCal, Google Calendars and one of the sync programs that I have seen, it would work for me.

However, it seems that iCal is missing an obvious feature: the ability for one appointment to be on multiple calendars. Here is the scenario I want to support. Let's say there are three calendars:

Mine
Wife's
Family

I want to see Mine and Family, Wife wants to see Wife's and Family. Any time Wife or I enter and appointment we want to decide, is this something the family should see? If the answer is yes, we add the appointment to the our own calendar and the Family calendar.

You might ask, why not just add it to only the Family calendar and always show both calendars together? The reason is, then there is no way to view "my appointments only." I can only view "all my appointments plus everything that the family is doing" or "those of my appointments that the family does not need to know about."

You might also ask, why don't my wife and I simply share each other's calendars. The reason is, there are only a small percentage of each others appointments we care to see. Also, we have a son who will soon be keeping a calendar. We could all share each other's calendars. However, we might want to have another shared calendar "Parents" that only Wife and I share.

Let me further explain my motivation. Basically, we are doing all of this now with our Palm OS platform. We use a service called WeSync that allows us to do exactly what I have described. It's really awesome. However, for obvious reasons, I would like to dump my Treo and get an iPhone, but this one issue is enough to block me. We are totally hooked on what I would call "real" calendar sharing.

Am I missing something? Is there some way to accomplish this in the Mac world?
