OK, so I've always used a case on the phones that I've owned.

Had a otterbox on my 4s and lifeproof on my 5, both of which the home button was protected and screen covered

With the 5S, it's going to be the first time I'm using it with an open face, i.e. screen uncovered with back case.

I'm a bit worried the outer ring around the home button, as well as the home button will get scratched over time, i.e. dirty fingers or dirty rag to wipe it down.

What do you guys think?

I like taking prestine condition of my phones, and this touch ID ain't helping it :)

Sapphire is second in hardness to diamond, normal use isn't going to scratch that new button.

There's a girl that knows her precious stones and metals:D

Damn right!

is the ring also made out of sapphire?

No, no shiny metallic ones, that's like the same as what's used in the rest.

But really, you'll be fine. I've got an 18 year-old running around with an iphone 5 to parties, work....and I know he dropped me one day ( my ear hurt for awhile as it was very loud ), while waiting in the metro station, but he has no scratches, at all.
