Hello, I thought that some people might find my results interesting if they are considering using a 2019 MBP with Octane PR13

I have 2 x Razer Core X eGPUs with a 6900XT in each with a 5700XT in a node (cMP 5,1). The eGPUs are on separate buses, there are only two sadly.

But I broke it down to show the progression (5500M is the internal 8gb). The scene was more complex and larger than the Chess scene but I've added those results where I tested it.

5500M = from memory just under an hour (Chess scene 46s)

5500M + 5700XT = 12m 12s (Chess scene 15s)

5500M + 6900XT = 8m 1s (Chess scene 10s)

5500M + 5700XT + 6900XT = 6m 8s (Chess scene 7s)

5500M + 2 x 6900XT = 3m 45s (Chess scene didn't test)

5500M + 2 x 6900XT + 5700XT (node) = 2m 21s (Chess scene 4s)

So there you go – considerable speed upgrades.

I'm waiting to add another 5700XT to the cMP 5,1, so we'll soon see what that adds. If it's as linear I'll look at a 3rd in there.

Happy to answer any questions :)

UPDATE: I added a second 5700XT to the cMP:

5500M + 2 x 6900XT + 2 x 5700XT (node) = 1m 49s (Chess scene 3s)

There is not enough space for a third 5700XT in the cMP - so that's it for a while!

Great, this is the advantage of the intel version that you can basically upgrade the machine for some more years till they drop support. You cant do this with M machine now…so i believe that bcs of this my intel 16” will remain a good workhorse for next couple of years..just need to find a cheap card :)

Glad you found it helpful :) Octane devours graphics capability – the internal GPU of the M1 Macs is useless to me, I simply need raw GPU power (and the more of it the better!). The lack of clear direction in regards to this makes planning my expenditure quite difficult - the best option for the moment is to keep with Intel. But I'm sure Apple will come up with a solution, who knows that could be as simple as allowing eGPUs on AS, or even releasing their own discreet graphics solution? Until then, this is the best solution I can find.
