I'm on the fence about purchasing one of these SSDs for a new 2011 MB Pro 2.3 13".

Both are on amazon.com. The Crucial is $379 and the Vertex is $389. It seems like both have been hit or miss for various buyers. I'll have Win 7 available via BootCamp if needed for any FW updates. I looked at the OWC, but ruled it out at the $499 price point. Any thoughts from users? Thanks

2 months? I have one arriving Monday and there are some ppl with benchmarks in the forum already! The 240GB is 500 but take a look at the review on Anandtech.com. It absolutely shatters the competition.

The 120GB will still perform well, just nowhere near as well as the 240.

MacMini is right though, you have a 2011 uMBP (as do i) w/ a 6GBps port capable of Sata III. - USE IT!

Where did you buy yours?

Same question here.
I just ordered a refurb 2010 15", so no SATA III anyways. Would like to know which one is better for last year's model. (Or any other brands?)

I'd really not wait 2 months, but rather go with either the Vertex 2 or Crucial C300 now. Just looking for opinions on which one to go with.

no, the vertex 3 is out now.. availability is a bit on the dry side tho'

i would not get a v2.. there are a few dodgy ones around that have the cursed 25nm with 64gb die, where only half the channels are used... altho much less of a problem on the 240gb

if cost is an issue, as u stated that u ruled out an owc based on its high cost, the vertex 3 is around the same price of the owc drive - the latter being the prev generation of the sandforce controller

would you consider a 120gb vertex 3?
do not forget the vertex 3 is the latest offering of the sandforce 2000 controller, the crucial has the old marvel controller...

personally, i would only ever buy sandforce models... for sata 2 drive i would get an owc, for sata 3 - vertx 3 is a beast!

The 120GB Vertex 3 (or any other 120GB) is too small for my needs, unfortunately. I need the optical drive, so can't put an HD or SSD there.

you could get a 120gb for very basics:eek:sx/apps
then have a couple of external hdd via firewire 800 running in RAID 0?

TC to store back/up user files/docs/media

I have a 1TB for TC and storage, but would rather not have to lug it around. It's fine for when I'm home. I really just want a stable SSD @ 240GB-256GB of storage. I really didn't want to go with the stock Apple 256GB SSD at $585 for the upgrade.

Dilema

I had the same problem, though I was about a month behind you. I ended up going with the Vertex 2, which I got at $379. It is a fantastic drive. I know there are users who suffered through all the firmware issues before me, but the 1.32 firmware is awesome with no issues at all. I will wait on the vertex 3 until the prices drop and pick it up then.

Very interesting and informative thread...made me join just to ask advice please? :)

I have a macbook pro 17 and running a music program called cubase.

I am considering an external SSD drive which I would like to bus power via the FW800 port.

My questions are:

1. Will there be any benefit going for a Vertex 3 6gb SSD or will the FW800 connection limit and potential benefit over Vertex 2 opposed to Vertex 3?

2. Can anyone recommend a good UK supplier of a FW800 bus powered SSD caddy?

3. Lastly, with say a Vertex 2 SSD via FW800, will that give me far better performance than say a normal 7200 drive via FW800?

Sorry if my questions seem basic, I'm not too up o this technology, would really appreciate some experienced advice.

Many thanks
Al
