I've got an oldish Airport Extreme base station (b/g/n) that has recently started acting funny - or I've noticed it because I've been doing more things on the network.
What seems to happen is that a "write new settings then restart"...fails. I noticed it first trying to connect an Airport Express to extend the range - I would set it up, you'd get to the final restart section, and the base station would never "reappear" in the AirPort Utility. It would need to be unplugged to reset, and when it was, the settings for the Express hadn't took.
Blaming the Express, I shelved the project for a bit.
But recently, it's been happening when I try to add MAC addresses to the filter, or set-up port forwarding. Resetting it to factory settings makes it behave for awhile - enough to say dump all the white-list MAC addresses into it, but then within a reset or two, its back to its old ways.
Any idea what's going on, or how to fix it? Or is the router just on it's last legs?
