I've searched the forums and haven't yet found this specific error. I have new mac mini which I'd like to act as the Time Machine server for my other macs. I've selected a specific folder to serve as the time machine back up location in the File Sharing Preference.

When I started my iMac's my very first back up to the designated Mac Mini hosted folder, it appears to connect and start backing up. But after a few minutes I get this error:

The network backup disk does not support the required capabilities.

I found a few posts suggesting that it maybe a conflict due to differing SMB versions between the Mac Mini and iMac. But after double checking, I was on version 3, which the posts said would solve this issue... sadly the issue persists.

Seeing how many folks have been able to make their Mac Minis' time machine servers in this forum, i'm surprised no one else has run into this as well. I'd love any advice. Thanks!

Old post, but for what it's worth if anyone else happens to get this error with Time Machine backing up to an external USB drive attached to another Mac on the home network, disable Remote Management on the destination computer. I am backing up with Time Machine to a drive on another mac and when I enabed this feature in Sharing, Time Machine started throwing this exact error. Turned it off and backups resumed.

I have remote management enabled on my 2014 Mac mini network server in the basement and my upstairs M2 Mac mini backs up via Time Machine to one of its internal drives without issue. I also have Sync Folders Pro+ backup from my upstairs external media drives to an external USB drive connected to the server Mac mini and those drive backup without a hitch as well.

unless the issue is specifically related to Time Machine backups to remote USB drives.
