odd hard drive problem.

when I check its status on Disk Utility, it will sometimes will say failing while on other occasions it will say it's ok. has anyone had the same problem?

Do you mean the SMART status says that it's failing? You should definitely believe it if it says it's failing, considering how bad it has to be for that to show a failure. Back up your data.
