Hi guys,

I purchased the iMac listed in my sig back in January of this year. On two occasions today my iMac has turned itself off.

I'll just be using it normally and then the screen goes black and it's instantly off. When I turn it back on it makes the normal noise and boots straight back up no issues.

Any idea what's going on? I'm not particularly worried because I've got a Time Machine backup and important stuff backed up on Dropbox but I'm going back to university on Saturday and need the computer for my dissertation.

A couple of ideas to check although nothing is definitive:

1) External power failure - Did anything else plugged into the same outlet lose power? Could have been some electrical shorts. Try plugging into a different outlet.

2) Internal power failure - Perhaps some fans are not working and the internal temp is getting to high and causing an automatic shutdown. Use iStat/ Smc fancontrol and make sure all your fans are running properly. Reset the SMC on your iMac: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964

If none of those help, then it's probably best to take it into Apple.

Is this normal?
