I have gotten this error recently when trying to install any OS on my Mac mini 3,1 - supported and unsupported OS both fail. It will boot from the USB installer and start installing, but then I get the error in the photo below. This was an El Capitan install, which fully supports this machine.

I have been a Mac user for many years, and have never seen an error like that before.

I would suspect your bootable installer is old and the signature is not valid. Download a fresh El Capitan installer from Apple, build your installer, and try again. Internet Recovery might also be an option for you, but I don't remember if you machine has it.

You were exactly right! I am so happy to have finally solved this. I was still able to do TM restores, but the error was eating at me for about two weeks. I'm actually a little embarrassed I couldn't figure that out, especially since I installed an internal frame and connector board from a different mini. It should have been obvious to me.

Anyway, I made a fresh High Sierra installer, and it installed perfectly. Thanks again!

Just curious - the 3,1 is not natively supported with High Sierra...
Did you use the dosdude1 patcher tool to install High Sierra on your Macmini3,1? or some other method?

I used the dosdude1 patcher. Works like a charm when I have all my ducks in a row. One went stray earlier. He's back in line now.
