Howdy folks!
I just took my 16 inch MBP M1 Max to a conference to present and ran into some anomalies. I think I have narrowed it down but would appreciate some other troubleshooting suggestions if I run into this issue again.
My MacBook would freeze twice on average during each of my one hour sessions. The good news is most of my content in quite quick and linear so I was not falling backwards when it happened. Just frustrated. It also restarts quite quickly and gave me a chance to overview the item I was going over and also answer questions. If it got worse I planned to swap back to my previous MBP that I also took to the conference.
The issue happened I felt I was using more calls to the MBP. I was showing some path animation options in PowerPoint and then video recording options via Chrome. It seemed like most times when I ramped up my activity my Mac crashed vs me clicking through slides and light web browsing.
My first thought was HDMI but will admit I am not sure of the exact setup for this conference. It was a pretty long cable with some connectors and I wondered if that caused some issues. I will admit also to not knowing if wonky HDMI cabling can cause this.
My other thought was my 140W Power Adapter. The surge protector it was going into looked pretty old and put a request in for a replacement to see if that might be an issue. It never showed up and the room was modified anyway after day two for a ramped up day three due to the Braves parade.
Another presenter has the exact same Mac I have but only brought a 100W adapter. We swapped rooms often throughout the first two days of the conference. He had no issues at all. Once I learned this after day two I moved to a 100W adapter I had with me and on day three I had no issues whatsoever. They also however changed the HDMI setup for the closing keynote in the room I was in.
I use HDMI at home often to work on a large screen and never had any issues like this. I took the 140 W Power Supply I use at home to the conference.
This reminded me of when you trip the Airplane Seat Power because the power supply has too many watts. I have never however had a machine crash in the process.
Wondering if anyone has run into the same and if they have can shed some light. Will be packing my older MacBook and power supply for the next few months of conferences as a fall back (for many reasons)
Thanks!
