Odd screen issue on MB pro

Hi I've been asked to replace a screen on a MB pro (model A1229) for a friend as his is/was dead.
When backing up using a dvi monitor the screen came back to life which was good

However it has gone again so I was wondering what it could be as it seems more likely to be a software problem or possibly just a loose connector.

Does any one have any ideas?
