It seems like on coffee shop wifi, my battery estimate is considerably longer than on AirPort Extreme. and it seems to burn through battery at a slower rate %age wise too, not just from estimate.

5ghz band at home, maybe ill have to test 2.4ghz since I have the wifi connections split now?

is this normal?

is it because I have a really powerful router and I'm right next to it/ in a small apartment?

I wonder..

also just to clarify, I'm on 10.12.4 but have battery estimate because I copied the battery.menu file from core services folder back when battery estimate was a thing still earlier in macOS builds

it seems relatively accurate, too, fwiw

Battery estimates on the new MacOS are horrible. It can vary based on everything from Light sensor readings to wifi noise to the brightness on the display. a small tweak will immensely swing the estimates. focus on how long the computer is actually functional as opposed to the damned battery timer. once you get below the 20% mark thats when i start paying attention.

Do you have NAS setups at home?? is your mac constantly backing up to them??

Ah yes, I do..

Do I want to eject the NAS every time Im connected to network?

Don't really use it to access or transfer anything, but it is connected to my network indeed.
don't use it for scheduled/regular backups either.

It shouldn't use battery if you are not backing up to it but it might be worth checking if your computer is constantly accessing it and turn it off to check battery drain.

Yeah its odd it still feels like coffee shop I get better battery estimates and seems accurate in terms of slow drain

I unplugged my NAS too just to try to isolate it to that

so odd, must be a lot of interference in my area where its hunting for the signal

I haven't a clue to be honest
