MP 7,1 Odd USB behaviour with Apple I/O card

Hey folks.
I have an external USB DAC (Khadas Tone board) plugged into the Apple I/O card via USB 2 to USB-C cable The DAC on the USB-C end and it works perfectly.... that is until I plug in another USB 2 cable, in this case an external drive. The DAC shows up on system report and shows up as Audio device but no sound until I remove the external HD.

Anyone come across this before? Wondered if it was a power issue but the External HD has its own power source.
