# of contacts does not appear (sometimes)

I have been intermittently adding contacts into my iphone. However, the number of contacts has stopped appearing at the bottom of the scroll list (last count was 94, so I don't think I have too many). If you hit the alphabet quick scroll it will take you to the last name but there will be no number of contacts. So I use the finger scroll and still no number. Am I doing something wrong?
