All - I have a 2018 13" MacBook Pro connected to a 4k display via an off brand USB-C AV Multi-adapter (HDMI). I have the USB C power adapter connected to it as well as a USB A keyboard.

It gets very warm to the touch. The adapter is metal. Is this behavior normal?

Thanks.

Seems like most of the USB-C device do get warm. There was a thread last week about a jump dive that got so hot they could not hold onto it. There are also post of the Thunderbolt docks getting quite warm. If on battery power only I would unplug when not in use to save on battery if not plugged in.

Thanks Newtons. I've been wondering if I should just go and get the Apple branded one...it's about 3x the cost of this off brand one.

The apple one won't do 60hz 4k, afaik, and any one that supports 4k will have an active chip in, not just be a straight adapter.

I tried 2 off brand adapters on Amazon and had enough issues with them (image flickering, low power delivery, USB port problems) that I decided to spend the money on the Apple one.

If yours is working fine outside of the additional heat I probably wouldn’t worry about it.
