Office '08 Mac to Office '03 PC and vice versa

I sometimes have to do microsoft word documents on a mac and transfer them to a PC to continue with my work. However, I've come to find that when opening documents started on 03' in my Mac or vice versa, the formatting changes. The spacing, the font and such. Is this only my problem? Is there a way to fix it? Does this occur when using Micorosoft '07 PC to mac?
