i know the release of office 2007 from microsoft jumbled up everything because of it's file formats with the .x and what not. does 2008 for mac read and save these formats ie .docx, .ppsx, .xlsx?

Yes it does that just fine.
 
Yep, 2008 has the same defaults as 2007. You can choose to save to the older sans-x formats as well.
