I just bought a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) running OS X v. 10.11.3 and am super excited because I moved from a 2009 HP that gave me the blue screen of death here and there.

I am about to install Office 2011 for Mac but need advice about security. Will Office 2011 make my computer more vulnerable to viruses and malware? Do I need to install antivirus and anti-malware software before installing Office 2011? Or will applying the most updates to Office 2011 be sufficient?

There are no viruses in the wild that can infect your new Mac. You do not need AV software, however, there is malware which can interfere. You can download and install the free Malwarebytes Anti Malware app from here. Office 2011 is safe to install but be sure to download and install all the MS updates which do include security patches.

ok thanks chscag for the advice. I'm still amazed how Macs are virus-free! I'll be sure to install Malwarebytes and the MS updates for 2011 however.
