Office 2016 - spinning beachball?

I startup OS X Sierra.

Office for Mac 2016 installed (lastest version)

When Word, Powerpoint or Excel icons are clicked on (from the Dock) the beachball will come up for around 10-15 seconds. Once they open up they are fine OR if they are opened a second time they are fine. But what could be causing this?

I'm not just bashing Microsoft saying this, I generally like word and excel on windows but....

They are constantly crashing or bogging down my mac. It really seems like they put a very minimal amount of effort in optimizing office for mac. Which makes sense they want you to like it more on windows.
