It appears to only be available via a subscription to Office 365. I do not like this option. Does anyone know when it will be available as a purchase?

That's because they want you to pay them all the time, i.e., subscription. Adobe is the same with with Lightroom. You can buy the boxed edition but heaven help you find it on their site.

It is kind of available now. I say 'kind of' because it is riddled with bugs.

I like the new interface in Office 2016, but it runs so slowly that I actually removed it all and installed Office 2011. 2011 runs much faster on my 2015 macbook air

I have Office 2001 for the Mac. Runs faster than 2011 but it only works in Classic on the older PowerPC macs.
I guess Office will just get faster as you go to older and older versions.

I just installed it on my 2010 MBP and I am shocked at how bad the performance is. Typing lag, and it kicks the fans into high gear. Something's not right.

I don't like the new interface, either. There is no longer a small, customizable toolbar––just a huge ribbon that makes me click back-and-forth between two tabs.

Just purchased it via Microsoft's Home Use Program (HUP). I'm less than impressed. First, the install (and running any app's) can be a bit buggy under El Capitan. Yeah....MicroSloppyCoding knew of the problems before it was released, but chose not to do anything to fix the problems. Outlook still lacks features that Mac Mail has (i.e. ability to resize an image or video before sending).

I wound up uninstalling until MS gets it's poop together and makes the needed fixes. I'm glad I only spent $10 for it vs. $150.

2016 is quite buggy. Looks great though

Still missing obvious functionality(good luck finding or using super/sub scripts), semi poor performance. Lags and stutters and crashes frequently

I suspect El Capitan is partly to blame as 2011 bugs out too
