Office 2K8 needs TWO commands to do anything

This is driving me batty!

I select some text in Word 2008, then press Cmd-C. Nothing happens. I have to press CMD-C TWICE.. and it's the same when I try and boldface text: Select it, press Cmd-B.. then press Cmd-B again.

WHY does this happen?

It only happens in Office 2k8. All my other apps work just fine.
