I have had a 10.4 Tiger OS running Office 2008 (on a 17 Powerbook G4) for about a year and have had bad problems with fonts forever (i.e. I loathe Microsoft Office 2008 but have to work with my PC clients, even though I have spent months with their disappearing fonts. They supply me with templates and jpegs and gif logos, and boxes for tick reports, plus a space for text response, and I fill the box in). It used to be very buggy, but now its more critical, and any Office document wont open in the font I want it to. I have even reinstalled the software numerous times after uninstalling the original but the same bugs appear (not immediately, but after about the third time I open documents..)
I have gone into font books on the Mac and tried to validate fonts and take out duplicates - Arial, New Time Roman, the fonts I need to use - but the same problems reoccur soon. Even after it was indicated that I had some downloaded buggy fonts - which I deleted - after the initial relaunch, all over again, the default fonts dont appear, they default to some other font, and when I try to write it over on a menu of fonts they pick something else. It makes no sense...
Every time I try and fix the problem, I HAVE NO CONTROL. Font book doesnt indicate anything as corrupt. So I go through font books, or Office 2008, or whether, and systematically find what was wrong, but after transferring everything today to my new (expensive) Imac on Snow Leopard, now - after initially opening up fine - all fonts there for the taking and using, and pulldown menus showing different fonts, so I assume the application is working - NOW all the old Word documents open up without recognizing any text at all (not spreadsheets, not boxes, not templates, nothing; its all blank. If I select the blankness and pick a font it defaults to that, bit otherwise its invisible...) A blank page, other than the green and red underlines of spellcheck. Thats all I see, plus some grey lines from a box.
Everything else is running fine. Safari. And so on. I feel, in my gut, something is wrong with font books, and Microsoft Word. But now I'm running everything on a brand new spanking computer, but now, even as Word documents disappear, now Excel spreadsheets are also partially disappearing. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
