“If it seems too good to be true, it is,”

I had office Home and Business 2021 installed on my 16” M2 Max MacBook Pro and have been having problems with downloading attachments. I saw a deal for Office Home and Business 2024 for $99 from StackSocial on PC Mag. I searched if it was a scam but seemed it wasn’t so I ordered. I didn't think it would resolve the attachment download issue but thought it would at least give me a few more years of Office support on my Mac and I use 2024 on my desktop PC.

First license wouldn’t download. They sent another, it downloaded but wouldn’t install. Support sent a link on how to more completely uninstall Office on a Mac. There isn’t a simple way to do it. I followed the uninstall steps and installed Office 2024 again and it installed. Opening the apps though said they were 2021. I uninstalled again and afterword, finally upgraded to Mac OS Tahoe 26.2 and installed Office 2024 again. Same issue, still 2021. I poked around and somehow found an option to refresh my license and with a window that opened, asked me to log in to my MS account, I refreshed and closed everything. I opened the Office apps and now all are at 2024.

Maybe it is true after all. Also, the day after I upgraded Apple sent an email telling me my AppleCare+ had expired the day before I upgraded to Tahoe. Glad I didn’t brick the upgrade. Now to check how much extending coverage will cost. It saved me with my prior MacBook Pro. I still seem to be having the same issue where attachments won't download.

Where attachments won't download...with what? Outlook?
Not sure which step you are asking about. The first attempt the OFFICE license would not download. I was given a new license and it downloaded but did not install. I needed to go to Library and delete additional MS files. After that it downloaded and installed but all Office apps still showed 2021. I repeated the delete and install process with the same result but this time I was found a way to refresh my license from one of the Office apps, don't remember which one, with a MS window that opened, required me to log in to my MS account, and all Office for Home and Business apps updated to 2024, and all is good.

Why this happened

MacOS will default to the last-used installer if any Office files remain on the system. Installing directly from your Microsoft account ensures the correct 2024 build is applied and permanently tied to your license.

You did the right thing by re-registering through Microsoft — that confirms your license is valid. If anything still looks off, feel free to send a screenshot of:

I still can't get Outlook attachments to open.
