Office (MS Word 2008) Spell Check

This has been addressed a lot here in this forum but my problem seems different. I'm not getting any spell checking and while the forums address various fixes, they mostly start with Tools/Spell Check and I don't even have a spell check option in Tools. Anyone have any observations?
