Apple today released a full trailer for the upcoming Apple TV+ series "For All Mankind."

Told through the lives of NASA astronauts, engineers, and their families, "For All Mankind" presents an aspirational world where NASA and the space program remained a priority and a focal point of hopes and dreams, according to Apple.

"For All Mankind" stars Joel Kinnaman, Michael Dorman, Wrenn Schmidt, Shantel VanSanten, Sarah Jones, and Jodi Balfour. The series was created by Emmy Award winner Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert, and Ben Nedivi. All three serve as executive producers alongside Maril Davis.

Apple TV+ is Apple's upcoming subscription-based streaming video service, launching November 1 in over 100 countries and regions. The platform will eventually offer dozens of original TV shows and movies, such as "The Morning Show," "Dickinson," "See," "For All Mankind" and "The Elephant Queen."

Apple TV+ will be available on the Apple TV app on iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac, and other platforms, including online at tv.apple.com, for $4.99 per month with a seven-day free trial. Since September 10, customers who purchase any iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, iPod touch, or Mac can get one year of Apple TV+ for free.

"For All Mankind" will premiere alongside Apple TV+'s launch on November 1.

the first woman in space was soviet. it’s extremely unbelievable that women would been given any consideration of the sort in late 1960s america
Username checks out ;)

Continued focus on space as a priority is an interesting premise for a show—one that’s been at the center of several of my favorite sci-fi novels but that I’ve never seen explicitly broached on screen. This might be the first Apple-exclusive production that holds genuine interest to me.

I agree, because shock horror it didn't happen. However, this is speculative history so we can have some fun. How America would have reacted to a soviet landing first, most of the way through the Apollo program is a very interesting concept.

In my nerdy speculation of America's second place to the moon, I think the following is most likely. America would still have carried through despite coming second, but there wouldn't have been as many missions as we got. It would have been canceled and allocations pivoted to the Space Shuttle program, and further deep space probes, in an effort to come first at something in space, as well as compete with Russia in more terrestrial settings.

Astronaut training was well underway from early on in the program, so the first Americans on the moon would still have been the men. A US propaganda win getting women first to the moon would be rushed. Lessons learned from Apollo 1 may have crushed that (along with a conservative zeitgeist of the American population putting women in harm's way at that time). I don't feel a female follow up to a US second place to the moon would have been a realistic goal.
Primarily for the following reasons. The US skipped a space station and made the moon the goal because a station is heavy lift contest and the Russians would have won that. So they made the goal one both-sides would have to start from scratch technologically. So with this in mind, if the goal was simply to put a different payload on the moon in the form of a woman, then the Soviets would win that too. Given they already put a man on the moon in this alternate history and their technology superior, NASA and US strategists would know this and pivot pursuing other goals in space.

Soviets were secret about their space program, NASA was public. Soon as the US would have announced female astronauts to the moon. The soviets would have sent a female in a matter of months IMO.

Still, fun to think about. Seems to be the only interesting thing on Apple TV.

I think one of the scrapped Apollo missions planned to have some women in the crew, didn't it? That would have launched in the first half of the 1970s...

This looks like high priced over produced boredom. I hope I'm wrong, but so far nothing they've shown of any of their shows looks like actual fun. Remember fun, Apple?

Out of the first batch of shows, this is the one I’m looking forward to the most.
Me too.

Ronald Moore... check.

Sci-Fi... check.

Two of the most glaring holes in Netflix Originals are space sci-fi and medieval fantasy genres.

Hopefully, this one will be good.

Me Three. Anything dealing with NASA, Space Travel or the like, I'm in for.

Going to give "See" a shot too.

I’m surprised more comments are similar. That doesn’t seem like a captivating plot. Sure it’s high production value, but stale. It’s more of a mediocre movie.

“See” in the other hand seems creative.

I really want Apple TV+ to succeed. I’m definitely a fan of the home team. Unfortunately, none of offerings so far have really captivated me. This trailer is confusing. Lots of lovely shots, a popular song and mounting excitement and tension, but over what, exactly? I’m just not sure what this show is about. Putting a woman on the moon would certainly be a triumph of civil rights, but was that ever something that we competed with the USSR in? it would also say nothing of our technological fitness as a nation. Really liked Battlestar Galactica and so I hope this is good.

Everything I’ve seen from ATV+ so far feels a little bit stiff, a little too deliberate. I’m hoping it’s just a matter of ineffective trailer editing. But I will watch all the shows when they come out and hold anyreal assessments until then.

Agree completely. Though with billions to spend on programming you would have thought they could afford to pay for a good trailer producer and exec to reflect the shows more. I therefore suspect maybe the trailers are correct and they cut the best with what they had.

Main issue I have with See is that they're all blind yet wear warpaint. For whose benefit? lol. I'm sure its explained in the show.

The thought of the Soviets making it to the moon first triggers me. This show provokes me. I’m gonna Watch it.

Maybe it's just a tradition passed down from generation to generation, from when it made sense to wear it. Like a ritual of some sort.

What about these women? https://history.nasa.gov/flats.html

While sexism played a role, the reason there were not female astronauts was the requirement that NASA astronauts be graduates of military jet test piloting programs. There were no women who were graduates of those programs. Changing that rule would have also opened the gates to other (male) applicants NASA wasn't ready to consider at the time given the uncertainties of spaceflight. NASA changed rules and had their first female class of astronauts in 1978: https://www.space.com/31616-nasa-first-female-astronauts-anniversary.html. The article also points out that the 1978 class was the first new class of astronauts selected after 1969.

In any case, the USSR's launching a woman into space was purely public relations/propaganda. She was the only one (her flight was in 1963) until 1982 when Russia sent another woman into space. If the USSR was really committed, they would have sent more earlier than that.

LOL, you did catch the part that this is speculative historical fiction, right? The Soviets land on the moon first, all the rules change, the stakes are different. It's a different story world than the one that we are familiar with so to say it is "extremely unbelievable" for anything in this imagined world is perhaps missing the point.
