Hi

I apologise if this has been asked before but I have searched and not found a satisfactory answer.

I have purchased an officially unlocked iPhone 3G from Italy and I am using in with an operator that is not on Apple's official list. I understand that I can't have Visual Voicemail since this is dependent on a contract with one of Apple's official operators. However, the Voicemail button I assume should dial the number to my operator's voicemail similar to holding "1" on the keypad of another mobile. However, when I press and hold either "1" or press on the Voicemail button nothing happens.

I found that by using the following *5005*86*xxx# where "xxx" is replaced with my operator's voicemail number, the button functions.

My question is what actually happens when you use the above code? Is the phone modified? Will it "lose" this if restored?

Finally, why isn't this information on Apple's website for those who have purchased officially unlocked phones?

Thanks

P.S. One other thing. The voicemail number used in the above code will it work when you are abroad roaming?
