I was going to order a new MacBook Pro unibody for 1699. I couldn't believe the price for that thing. So cheap!

However, I suddenly noticed that the 1699 didn't offer the 9600GT discrete video card.

I was taken back. Asunder. As if someone had heated up my keyboard to a burning 400 degrees.

How could they do this kind of business trickery? Hiss!

All I'm buying here is an overglorified 13.3 inch MacBook with a bigger screen! They never really took down the price at all! It's still 1999, with the same exact offerings.

Hiss Apple, hiss. I couldn't believe you'd pull this kinda of marketing trickery. I'd actually thought you came to your senses by taking down the price 300 bucks, but no, you decided to remove the one thing I wanted in the Pro laptop.

Hiss! I guess I'll wait till next June.

yeah they're so trisky about that kind of stuff.

wait, what does trisky mean again?

pretty cool how you seem like a cat with a disdain for apple. I think we'd prefer you purring instead of hissing, but thats apple's fault not yours, right?

ok I don't know why I replied to this thread.

Mine came today (ordered yesterday)

$1050 off :eek::eek:

trisky indeed... thanks :apple:

the equivalent of the old 2.4 is now the 2.66, with 9600m GT with 256mb memory, its now got a larger harddrive and 4gb of ram, what are you complaining about?

I know its not any cheaper but its better value now, and will support 8gb of ram.

Not everyone needs the 9600 in their macbook, they may want the larger screen for photos but they dont need the extra graphics power. I bet only half the uMBP owners know how to turn on the 9600 anyway

Not all people, like myself, need the 9600M GT. I only bought the MBP for the 15" display. The 9400M is powerful enough for me to edit short movies and pictures.

ok, i just ordered a 15" 2.66, what am i missing out on that the last had?

You lost ExpressCard/34 Slot

that is all.

You gained a much improved battery system
You gained 2.4 -> 2.66 GHz
You gained SD Card slot
You gained 70 GB of hardrive space
You gained an extra 2 GB of DDR3 RAM
Some think you mebbe gained 60% incr color gamut

You got both graphics systems (same)
You got both internal cooling fans

I like what the (unexpected to me) updates did to the price of the previous generation... so I bought one.

But, I really also like what the updates do to the lineup of portables.

Something for everybody by adding a lower end 15" and upping both 13"ers

(iSavant's thumbs twiddle nervously as he awaits his new iPhone 3gS)

iCan'twait - enjoy that new Macbook! (looks like you held out long enough for that upgrade :) )

I think there's a typo in your user name.

What marketing trickery, they're detailing exactly what you're getting for the price. There's nothing underhanded or anything. If that MBP isn't a good fit for your needs or budget, either hold off or don't buy one.

Personally I'm on the 9400m GPU more then the 9600 and I use aperture that typically needs a potent GPU. My point is that unless you want to play games or are a heavy user that needs the power of the 9600 don't be so quick to dismiss the 9400m, its no slouch

I see why op said appple is trisky. They didnt lower the price. They just introduced a newer macbook pro to the line up. I think that is cheating to say that the lowered the price. We all can see that they did not.

Why is this "trisky"?

They aren't lying to you .. do you really think they could cut the cost of the computer by $300 and not have that dig into their cost range? Something has to go .. plus, 4Gb standard and more HD space, it's more of a tradeoff.

The fact is, 95% of MBP users will never utilize the 9600 GT M - so for the majority of their target audience, this is an excellent offering.

Watch those numbers guy. 95%!!! Any smart consumer would make sure that they purchased a laptop that can handle all of their needs in the present and future. One of previous posters mentioned this was a 4 year investment. You better make sure you have a dedicated video card in that laptop for sure. The only laptop that should have just integrated graphics should be the 13". Purely to make it portable and increase battery time. Apple is offering the 15" with the integrated graphics for the uneducated consumers that want the macbookpro name on their laptop period! In a year when developers start to take advantage of openCL offered in snow leopard these boards are going to be full of annoyed customers. The same people that said go buy a 9400M laptop will be pissed that their computing power is so much less than everyone else.

Wrong - because the 9400M, along with the "older" 8600GT, are among GPUs to be supported by Snow Leopard.

OpenCL in Snow Leopard will allow any supported graphics card, Integrated 9400 included, run faster and more efficient. Thus, it would be like bumping up the specs on your current model of card. Assuming that those apps were written utilizing Open CL. I still think that this would matter more to people running graphic intensive programs, who would benefit today by using the 9600 GT.
