I received my Apple Watch today but I cannot use it properly for email reading. I am using an iCloud email account and have always kept a 0 unread system with it. With my iPhone, everything is natural. When an email arrives, I get a banner notification where I can pull down and “mark as read”. If I decide to click on it for further reading, I am able. It will also “mark” it as read.

However, with the Apple Watch, this is not possible. Here are the possible actions you can take on a Mail notification:

1) Swipe left and click “clear”

2) Force touch and click “clear all”

3) Tap it once for detail view, and then drag down to “dismiss”

4) Tap it once for detail view, and then scroll to the bottom of the view and press “dismiss”

It turns out, none of the 4 options mark the email as read. My only option is to launch the full mail app by tapping it again in the detail view. And let’s be honest here, the Watch does not have the best response time it being the first generation. So the less app launching the better it is for users.

To make matter worse, at the bottom of the detail view there is a button called “mark as unread” which is absolute nonsense considering there is no way to mark the mail read anyway. I can only assume this is an unfortunate bug? For now, every time I see that button I can’t help but think that Apple is just mocking me at this point.

What's going on? How do you mark thing as read? Same for messages etc.
