I guess I'm guilty of not paying enough attention to the trend in Mac OS to have settings switched on to connect across multiply devices for sharing documents etc. I appreciate that it's handy to have notes on my MacBook sync with my iMac etc, however, I wanted to copy a large folder to an external drive today on my main iMac (intel 27) and I got this pop up message "cant connect to the server" Can somebody please explain is this because of "syncing across devices" I probably clicked the option when I was first setting up the iMac. How can I turn this off, so that I can copy to external drives without having to be connected to the network. I kinda cant help thinking that this slows everything down and perhaps also poses a security risk of sorts.

Many Thanks

Do you have iCloud drive setup on both systems? If you do folders in iCloud drive can be seen by both systems, or you can download from iCloud web.

As for "can't connect to the server" what were you doing to initiate the copy?

Yes, I had iCloud Drive switched on and desktop ticked!. I was copying a folder with a lot of files to an external, the folder was on iCloud Drive, so thats why I got the "cant connect" message. I should have been thinking about the ICD settings, but perhaps like a lot of people it's kinda easy to forget it's on, unless you turn it off, and click options to decide what you want shared across devices. I have switched ICD off now. I think I prefer not having everything on iCloud Drive. Thanks for the reply.
