I’m sure this has been asked many times. But from saving me for searching for it. I heard rumors they are made to stay on the charger all night and do a trickle charge till you take it off. So it won’t degrade the battery to have charging all night?

Hey Renho,

So far I did not have any issues with charging overnight, even for my series 3 as well.

how long did you have your series 3? Like did the battery life last the same past a year?

The series 3 did not have any issues thus far, I usually hit the GYM 3 times a week and so far the battery has been quite consistent

Been doing this since day 1 of the Apple Watch with no issues. My launch-watch was used for three years by myself then my dad, so it will be fine.

man can’t believe they last that long. Compared to phone battery’s that are done in a year!

ok thanks guys

Ever since series 0, I have charged every night and always has good battery performance so no need for you to worry

Same here. I’ve been putting my watch to charge overnight every day with each Apple Watch model since the Series 0 and never had any issues.

Never had a problem with my iPhones either. I upgrade every year but while I have them they are always plugged in to charge over night and even during the day when I’m at home when not using them.

Apple themselves put on the official site that it can’t be overcharged as it has smart charging which stops once at 100%. Plus as others have stated, it has nightstand mode which tells you it was made with this in mind.

I wear mine to bed as I run some sleep tracking apps. Charge before bed to 100% while doing my evening routine and charge again in the morning to 100% while i'm going through my morning routine.

so doesn’t that say something if you have to charge a lot? Lol I think they put in battery optimization for people for a reason, that leave it on all Night.

As you are asking about battery care, it would be interesting to know what is causing your phone batteries to die after a year.

I know a lot of people we careful about how to treat older phone batteries (pre-iPhone), letting them discharge before charging again, charging in one go, etc. But that was with nickel batteries, and most don't realise you should treat lithium differently. The main thing is to charge earlier, not regularly going below about 40% charge as that is when the chemistry degrades more. I know that might not always be an option with the watch, or even the phone, but charge when you can.

Not really sure what you're implying that "it says"...

When I go to bed I put my phone on a charger and I put my watch on a charger.

I'm not using either while asleep, so it's a good time for them to charge.

Indeed.

My iphone7 did great for three years before I bought an Xs, iphone6 did great for two years until I bought the iphone7, iphone4s did fine for two years before I bought the iphone5s. Each of them charged overnight as I slept.

I don’t see how. Not really. I don’t use either my watch or my phone when I’m sleeping so I might as well put them on charge. It has nothing to do with how long the charge lasts especially with the phone. As for the watch depending on usage I’m usually down to around 30% to 40% by the time I go to sleep which is not bad.

that is good, I wish I could make it that long but I’m always on my feet. Lots of sports.

If they say it’s ok to leave on charger when 100% for hours why would they make battery optimization so that it slows filling it up. I think there is something they aren’t telling us.

I think the point is there is no risk in leaving it on charge overnight but you don’t have to. I just like to do that as I don’t have time in the morning to charge it and I like to start my day with 100% charge on all my devices including my Bluetooth headphones.

I’ve done it from the beginning, starting with my S0 watch. Same with S2 and S4. Nothing to be concerned about.

What they're not telling you is they've moved past mid-1990's charging technology.

For a very long time now, phones and watches perform smart charging -- as the battery reaches 100%, the charging circuit backs off the charging current and typically ends up ceasing charging for a while, effectively switching to a "keep it topped up" mode that avoids the old problems of overcharging batteries.
