I listen to music with my phone docked (non-3g...dock that came with phone) attached to speakers. Is it okay to leave it constantly active (i.e. doesn't auto lock/backlight doesn't turn off)? I want to be able to switch tracks without hitting home/unlocking everytime.

That's a tough call, since with the screen on 24/7 it's going to get warm and eventually hot. This would be reason enough for me to not go that route...

I know when I first used Maps and 3g, I would leave the screen on without the autolock (never) while I was driving, but noticed the iPhone getting extremely hot rather quickly, so I stopped that process immediately...

just double-tap the home button while it's locked to bring up the iPod controls and you can change tracks, pause/play or change the volume. Of course this doesn't let you choose specific tracks, but it's a much better alternative to having the phone overheat unnecessarily
