I live in an area that doesn't have 3g and I want to get a used 2g/original iPhone for my wife (we're on a family plan together and I have an iPhone, but she doesn't...yet). Can I still activate it via iTunes by adding the $20/month data plan or has the upgraded, more expensive data rate taken effect? I'd rather go with the older phone and rates and save the $200-300 over the two years of the contract. I'm stalking a few of the original iPhones locally on Craigslist...

Yes, the old $20 (includes 200 SMS+data) is still available when activating an iphone version 1 via iTunes. I just did that last week when I restored my hacked iphone to become a legit ATT iphone customer so I can get a 199/299 3g iPhone.

Thanks -- this really solidifies my decision to get one of the original models. I hope to be able to snag one for around the same price as a 3g, perhaps even for a bit more considering the savings over the life of the 2 yr contract.
thanks, Ben
