Old 2g iPhone says its charging when it's not....

I recently had to go back to my old 2g iPhone after dropping and breaking the LCD screen on my 3G. After I put the phone on the charger or plug the phone up to an iPod player the main lock screen shows as if its plugged up being charged and it stays like this. The battery icon at the top has the charging symbol and I can't tell how much battery life I actually have. Plus its annoying when my wallpaper isnt showing because the phone thinks its charging. Has anyone had any problems with this or know how to fix it? Thanks.
