If say I bought a new iPhone and activated it through ziphone or something like that, and put in my old ATT sim from the first iPhone (that was activated through the regular process) would visual voicemail and everything work?

2g... i know no one would have the answer to the 3g... however if someone has the answer to the 2g iPhone it would give an idea of what to expect for those who dont want to extend our contracts assuming we can get an iPhone out of the shop without signing any documents.
