Old 3G backup not Xfering to new 3GS

Hi I'm new to this site so I hope I can get some assistance. I purchased the iPhone 3GS recently after having the 3G for 2 years. I had backed up my old phone to my MacBook and thought o was okay to sync to my new phone. As it turns out my computer can't take the update for iTunes because of older software. So I am stuck not being able to get my old backup onto my 3GS. Is there anyway to access the sync backup for my new phone?

Could you copy your backup file and then transfer it to a computer that can run the latest itunes version and restore to it that way?

Is that possible? Maybe I'll call apple again. The first time I tried they said I was out of luck. Thanks
