yeah, I have an old airport exreme, the dome one, and i just bought a new external hard drive. I was just wondering if i could just connect it to the extreme and run it on my computer that way, or if i had to upgrade my airport

The older dome-like AirPort Extremes can not use it's USB port for external drives, it is there for Printer Sharing. Therefore you can not share an external Hard Drive with them as with the new ones. To use this feature you will need to upgrade to the newer AirPort Extreme Base Station.

You need a new Airport Extreme to use NAS.

The old one wont know where to begin with a HDD connected to it.

I gathered he had the last generation Airport Extreme, with USB for a printer.
