This is a bit late, but in Snow Leopard & Leopard, you could (with no Finder window open) grab a file from, say, your desktop, drag it onto the Finder icon in the Dock, and a new Finder window would open and boom, I could move the file to where I wanted.

With Lion (and ML), this feature doesn't work. Instead when i try the same thing (with no Finder window open), it just opens App Expose (or App Mission Control or whatever you wanna call it). Is there a way to get the old functionality back?
