I'm likely buying a 2016 MBP.
I have some old 3.5" and 2.5" external drives with normal USB cables.
Can I just buy a new cable (mini-USB to USB-C) and connect to the MBP?
Do I lose any performance with this solution? Compared to buying a new drive that comes with a USB-C cable.

You can do what your describing.

As for performance it really depends on the drive and what spec it is. You won't lose the current performance if that's the question though
