....maybe 5 years?

It's been in the basement and I am now going to sell it. I plugged it all in and turned it on. I get my desktop background pattern (pebbly blue), but no icons or other programs to open and test. Nothing's on the desktop!

The mouse works. The keyboard (at least the on button) works. Can anyone assist?

I'd get an old PPC Debian Linux live CD and erase the drive. Write a pass of zeroes to be sure your old data is securely wiped. It would help me and others on this forum to know the exact specs of your machine. Memory, hard drive space, processor speed, and more.

Sorry- why would I want to erase my drive? Note: I am selling the G3 with the software that's in it.
