I have an old 15" MBP (2009) that the screen went out of and I decided, for the price, to buy a brand new (2012) 13" MBP. I want to get all of my stuff from my old computer onto my new one but can't see the screen or even get anything from the Mini DisplayPort to a TV, so can I take the old HDD out and plug it into my new computer after backing up this HDD? Then with the old one in here, back up to my external and switch everything back over to current settings?

You could just use Target Disk Mode or put the old HDD in an enclosure for 2.5" S-ATA HDDs, USB ones cost as low as 10 €.
Using a USB enclosure is probably the fastest and easiest way to do it. Plus almost any big box electronics store has them pretty cheap.

This is the best suggestion. it also will leave you with an external disk that can be used for various things.

Thanks for the replies! Didn't know there was something that simple to get.
