I could use some help with this since I've never really had to do much troubleshooting with macs (attesting to the quality, not duration of experience, mind)...
My wife has this old Tangerine iMac DV, no real upgrades except the previous owner put in a new HD (only 10GB!) about two years ago. It's running 10.3.9. The problem is that recently the machine has taken to shutting itself down while in use. No kernel panic or anything, just 'goodnight.' Or, she'll be using an app, usually Safari, and then get an error message for the app., but the finder also goes on the blink, the desktop goes blank (the HD icon is NOT on the screen), dock is gone, and thus she has to restart. Any idea what this could be? Any tips on how to find out? Advice would be much appreciated (and yes, a new computer is on the cards but not as soon as she needs the computer working) .
Other info., she still has 5GB free, so it's not a full disk. I have run disk utiliy, but I have not deleted any plists or preferences.
Thanks!
