Old iPhone 3G as iPod Issue

I have an old iPhone 3G that I'd like to turn into an iPod. It was working but was really slow, so I erased all of its contents through the Settings Menu. Now it will not activate through iTunes even when I use a valid active iPhone 3G sim card.

Any work arounds on this? I don't care about the phone function, but it seems to force me to get the sim working before I can "retire" it.

Which message did Itunes give to you?

Which firmware version on your phone now? you can always hactivate it with Redsn0w to by pass emergency call screen if you can't activate with your sim.

It just basically say to insert a valid sim.
