We had an old iPhone 7 Plus here, and all of sudden it started presenting a peculiar issue:

- FaceTime greyed out
- It can't make or receive WhatsApp calls
- It can't make direct phone calls with a SIM card in it
- If receives a direct call, it's muted

And yes, this is an iPhone problem, the same SIM card works 100% fine on another phone, the same model we also have.

Also, the same device works fine for playing Youtube, so there's audio. Just not working for all I said.

Is this some malfunctioning audio chip? I brought to a repair store and they said it could be fixed, but what in the world could have caused this?

I've seen issues with audio on some iPhone 7s. It wasn't common enough for Apple to create a service program for it though. Do a web search on "iPhone 7 Audio IC" and you'll find info.
