iPod OLD iTunes library to new MacBook?

My daughter has her iTunes library on our old iBook. We've run out of startup disk space, so can't update the iTunes. It's version 8.1.1. The MacBook we own has updated iTunes [10.0 (67)]. I've tried copying the old library onto an external hard drive and onto the iPod itself, but when I then copy the old library onto the MacBook, the new iTunes doesn't recognize the old library.

Any ideas for getting her library onto the new MacBook?
